Acne or Yauvanapidika as referred to in Ayurveda is caused due to excess production of oil from the sebaceous glands leading to the blockage of hair follicles. Although most commonly affected in adolescents, it can cause distress in adults too. Acne is caused mainly due to an aggravated Pitta dosha. It is believed to vitiate Rakta and meda dhatus. Ie blood and fat tissues. This imbalance produce toxins that block Srotas, and leads to pimple formation. usually affects the face, back and shoulders and other areas that are densely populated with sebaceous glands. Acne presents either as blackheads, whiteheads, pimples or nodules.
